The COBIS x Debate Mate Virtual Debate Competition 2023 took place online from 1-3 December 2023. The competition provides students with a platform to demonstrate their debating skills and compete against their international peers through live debates.

The team from Kellett School proudly took home the 1st place, with Tanglin Trust School [Singapore] securing 2nd place, and Hartland International School [United Arab Emirates] earning 3rd place.

Additionally, special recognition was given to several Kellett students who were nominated for a Star Speaker Award.

Anishka Verma [Year 11]  “Consistent and confident first speaker who fulfilled the role very ably. She also delivered a speech with great clarity and logic”.

Andrea Cheng [Year 12] “Andrea did a phenomenal job with this speech in terms of the sheer amount and quality of analysis she brought. Right from her rebuttals, she dispatched points raised by the other team in a critical, concise and systematic manner, pinpointing the specific nuances at hand. Her argument about how art becomes stagnant was also full of mechanistic explanation and the use of language here was precise and impactful. All in all, a stellar speech!”

Georgie Smith [Year 12] “She offered many points of information, was succinct in her speeches, whilst varying her tone and offering creative summary reasons to help her team win!”

The Virtual Debate Competition was a remarkable showcase of talent, dedication, and intellectual growth. Congratulations to all the student participants, the overall standard of debate displayed by the students was exceptionally high, impressing the judges with their confidence, creativity, and resilience. It was an exceptional weekend for everyone involved.
