A thriving House system forms an integral part of the daily life of every student at Kellett Senior School, so we have a similar system within our Prep Schools.
Houses are a traditional feature of schools in England, and it encourages the highest standards of sportsmanship, fair play, and appropriate behaviour. It provides the challenge and enjoyment of participating in a wide range of competitions based in sport, the arts and academia. It develops a sense of pride in their House and in the School, underpinning the school's aim of engendering "a love of learning and confidence for life".
The School Houses are encouraged to be competitive and to strive to do their best individually for the sake and benefit of the whole of their House. At the same time, the children must appreciate the efforts and victories of others, remembering that as long as they have done their best nothing more can ever be asked. The House system has the added benefit of bringing all ages of the school community together, and it enhances the bond and the responsibility of the older pupils to be role models and to care for the younger children in our community.
The House names were chosen by the student body, and represent animals that can be found in Hong Kong. The four houses are as follows:
Students who do not have an older sibling in the school will be assigned to Houses randomly, perhaps with the aim of balancing the houses in order to increase competition. Sometimes the assignment is based on the social and emotional needs of the child. Once a student has been assigned to a House, any younger siblings he or she has may automatically become members of that House when they arrive at the school. Once a student has been allocated to a House they usually stay with that House as they move up through the year groups.
When Year 6 students transition to Kellett Senior School, they will be assigned a new House.
One notable feature of the house system is the appointment of House, Deputy and Sport captains. There will be one House, Deputy and Sport Captain for each House and these roles will be undertaken by Year 6 students.
Throughout the year each house will meet to discuss their thoughts on key issues in the school, organise charity events and support each other in a wide variety of annual events, for instance, swimming galas, Art competitions, Sports’ Day, Poetry reading, talent competitions and Maths quizzes.
Students have the opportunity to enter events and achieve House points towards their House team. Every event earns House points which are collected, and a running total is maintained. At the end of the year a prestigious House Cup is awarded to the House that accrues the most points.
House points will be awarded for excellence in areas related to our Positively Kellett framework. The House points will be counted each week and the weekly House winners will be announced during assembly time. A House trophy will be awarded to the House Captains.
